Hello dearest chickadees and chickadudes,
Thanks for stopping by The Kitchenette. I hope you enjoy the food here, and that you check back frequently. In the meantime, I’ll try to explain why this page is here in the first place.
Rewind to a few months after I graduated college. Thanks to my BFF Anna, who introduced me to Google Reader (read: God’s Gift to the Interwebs) I discovered this whole concept of blogging. More specifically, I discovered food blogs. Filled with delicious pictures of delicious cakes and salads and chickens and whatnot. Wait, so people actually… make food… then… they photograph it? How could I resist?
Fast forward to May 2009, in which I am obsessed with food. I like to read about food, I like to cook food, I like to buy food (especially stuff I’ve never cooked with before). I love to cook, but I may be a wee bit fearful of baking. Although I hope to one day open a cafe or a catering company, in the meantime… I’m happy to share my recipes (and failures, duh) with you.
Some random facts:
I barely use cookbooks; I find most recipes online or in foodie magazines. I read Fine Cooking, Cooking Light, and Bon Appetit the most frequently, but I have been known to make the recipes I find in the free newsletter at the grocery store.
That said, I love to collect cookbooks. I have a growing list of, like, 12592873 cookbooks that I need to own this very instant, you know?
I spent the last 4 weeks in April counting down the seconds to the opening of the local farmers’ market, even though I knew the market would only have potatoes and asparagus.
I hate asparagus.
Assuming I get to build my Barbie Dream Home at some point, my kitchen will look similar to this. Which brings me to my next fact…
I have a total girl-crush on Martha Stewart. Everything she does is made of win, except for that tiny-stint-where-she-went-to-jail-for-lying-about-insider-trading-which-henceforth-shall-not-be-mentioned-again.
Check back soon! You don’t want to miss out on the massive amounts of fail fun that are sure to ensue.
xo

I have just stumbled upon your very charming blog. I too, have an unhealthy obsession with cookbooks. I have sooo many (but, not enough) that my bookcase that houses my collection looks like it is in pain. I grimace everytime I add another to my collection. I can’t wait to read what you are cooking next!

by the way, saw your comment on the canjam @ not finding canning jars, a local chain or independent grocery might have them (that’s where I usually get the largest variety in size), and even the country stores or feed & seed stores usually have them. Or online. Hate to say it, but walmart should have them too. Do they have walmarts in Denver?

Lovely blog! You wrote your current goal was to learn how to bake bread. Hey, you should join the BBA Challenge. We are baking our way through Peter Reinhart’s book “The Bread Baker’s Apprentice”. It’s really fun to share the success and failures with other fellow bakers. You can bake at your own pace – the advantage of being behind is you can real all the other bakers’ posts and learn from them
. Check out my blog to learn more about it.

I have so many cookbooks and I will ALWAYS buy more! I love them, I even have three microwave cookbooks and I don’t even own a microwave. I just can’t seem to part with them. I use most of them lots – even though I don’t follow recipes all the time, I love to use them as a springboard or just for ideas.

Hi! Thanks for stopping by my blog. I’m behind on blogging, but at least I do still get comments answered in a timely manner.
To answer yours: The Brew Hut in Aurora has carried real rennet and cheese cultures: http://www.thebrewhut.com/ You’ll need to call and check, though; they don’t advertise the cheese stuff online.
For vegetable rennet, you can find it at the Vitamin Cottage on Wadsworth just north of Hampden (but not at other VCs). Again, call before you go.
Good luck!

1. I might have just realized you have an about page. My bad. (My bad? Am I stuck in the late ’90s?)
2. Aww. I got an about page shout-out!
3. EDIT: You no longer hate asparagus.

I had to check out the rest of your blog after reading your Freshly Pressed entry. I just have to say… I’m a ‘wee bit fearful’ of baking too! I love to cook, but when it comes to baking, I always seem to find an excuse (or a lack of motivation!) not to. I think it’s because of the rigidity of baking: you have to follow the instructions or it won’t turn out right. With cooking, you can throw in a bit of this, try a bit of this, add a whole whack of that… And if you add a little too much or a little to little, it’s not the end of the world. Mistakes can sometimes be amazing.
Also, total agreement about Martha! Half the recipes are try are from her website!

Carter –
It was a pleasure meeting you today. You’ve inspired me to submit photos to the food porn sites. Look forwarding to following your posts and getting to know you. Love your style.

P.S. I would have like to have stayed for dessert – I’m a chocolate freak!

Hiya – found you because you were featured on the Freshly Pressed home page, and the fact that you love puppies while collecting whisks (alright, maybe not at the same time, that’d be weird) was a serious hook.
But I wanted to be the one to tell you that nothing I clicked on in the feature would take me to the blog – so sad. Obviously I found you on my own, but thought you’d wanna know in case you felt like trying to contact someone at FP who could fix that.
‘Looking forward to visiting often for more recipes after we start with them thar sweet taters!

Hi Jake! Thanks so much for the head’s up about the FoodPress link! I’ve contacted them to see if they can have someone fix it. It’s linking to a blog that I own, but I don’t do anything with. So sorry for the confusion! Thanks so much for visiting and I hope you enjoy the sweet potatoes!
